State4 marks

State four rules that must be followed when making a biological drawing.

TopMarks model answer

The drawing must be large and made with clear, continuous single lines in sharp pencil. It must not be shaded or coloured. Label lines must be straight, drawn with a ruler, must not cross one another and must touch the structure being labelled. The drawing must carry a title and the magnification.

Why it scores

These four marks are pure technique — no biology is being tested at all, which is exactly why they are the cheapest marks in the paper and the ones most consistently thrown away. A perfectly accurate drawing with no title and no magnification loses a mark it could never lose twice.

A common incomplete answer

Draw it big and label the parts.

What it costs: One mark of four. Size is credited. Shading, ruled label lines, the title and the magnification are all missing.

Explain2 marks

Explain why a biological drawing must be made in pencil and not in ink or colour.

TopMarks model answer

A pencil drawing can be corrected by erasing without spoiling the work, and a sharp pencil gives the clear single continuous lines the examiner requires. Ink and colour produce thick or shaded lines that obscure detail, and colouring counts as shading, for which no mark is awarded.

Why it scores

Two marks, two distinct reasons — one practical and one to do with the marking rules. “Because pencil is neater” is a preference, not a reason, and preferences are not credited.

A common incomplete answer

Because pencil looks neater than ink.

What it costs: Nothing. Neatness is a matter of taste. The marks are for erasability and for the fact that colour counts as shading.

Calculate2 marks

A drawing of a leaf measures 12 cm in length and the actual leaf measures 4 cm. Calculate the magnification of the drawing.

Magnification = length of drawing ÷ length of actual specimen. Magnification = 12 ÷ 4 = ×3

The working, line by line

  1. 1Magnification = length of drawing ÷ length of actual specimen — Write the formula first. In WAEC this is a method mark, and you keep it even if the arithmetic later goes wrong.
  2. 2Magnification = 12 cm ÷ 4 cm — Substitute. Both lengths must be in the SAME unit before you divide — this is where most errors happen.
  3. 3Magnification = ×3 — The units cancel, so magnification has no unit. Write it as ×3, never “3 cm”.

Why it scores

Magnification is a RATIO, so the units cancel and the answer carries no unit — but it must be written with the multiplication sign, ×3. Writing “3 cm” shows the candidate has not understood that the units cancelled, and the answer mark is lost even though the arithmetic was right.

A common incomplete answer

The drawing is three times bigger than the leaf.

What it costs: One mark at best. The formula is never stated, so the method mark is gone, and the answer is not expressed in the standard form ×3.

State3 marks

State three rules for labelling a biological drawing.

Label lines must be straight and drawn with a ruler, and each must touch the structure it labels. Label lines must not cross one another. Labels must be written in full and horizontally, outside the drawing.

Why it scores

Labelling is marked separately from the drawing itself, so these are marks you can earn even when the specimen has defeated you. Crossed label lines are penalised specifically — the examiner cannot tell which label belongs to which structure, so both labels fall.

A common incomplete answer

Use a ruler to draw the label lines.

What it costs: One mark of three. Correct, but nothing is said about lines not crossing, or about labels being horizontal, in full, and outside the drawing.

Explain2 marks

Explain why a biological drawing must carry a title and a magnification.

TopMarks model answer

The title identifies the specimen and the view drawn, so the examiner knows exactly what is being represented. The magnification states how many times larger or smaller the drawing is than the actual specimen, so the true size of the structure can be worked out from the drawing.

Why it scores

Each of the two marks belongs to one of the two items, so you must explain BOTH. Answering only about the title halves your score on a question that asks about two things — a pattern worth watching for across the whole paper.

A common incomplete answer

Because it is one of the rules of biological drawing.

What it costs: Nothing. “It is a rule” is not an explanation. The marks are for what the title and the magnification each tell the reader.
